OCULAR DISEASE DIAGNOSIS

Eye diseases are a leading cause of blindness and vision impairment worldwide. There are many different types of eye diseases, each with its own set of symptoms and treatments. Common eye diseases can be managed appropriately if they are diagnosed and treated early enough. Our doctors at Bell Vision are dedicated to this effort of preventative eyecare.

Here are some of the most common eye diseases:

  • Refractive errors: Refractive errors are the most common type of eye disease. They occur when the eye does not bend light correctly, which can lead to blurry vision. Refractive errors can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery.

  • Cataracts: Cataracts are a clouding of the lens of the eye. They are the leading cause of blindness in the world. Cataracts can be treated with surgery.

  • Glaucoma: Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve. It is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. Glaucoma can be treated with medication or surgery.

  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD): AMD is a condition that damages the macula, the part of the eye that is responsible for central vision. AMD is the leading cause of blindness in people over the age of 60. There is no cure for AMD, but there are treatments that can slow the progression of the disease.

  • Diabetic retinopathy: Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina. It can lead to blurry vision, vision loss, and even blindness. Diabetic retinopathy can be treated with medication or surgery.

  • Strabismus: Strabismus is a condition in which the eyes are not aligned properly. It can cause double vision, eye strain, and headaches. Strabismus can be treated with glasses, contact lenses, or surgery.

  • Amblyopia: Amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, is a condition in which the brain does not develop normal vision in one eye. It is usually caused by strabismus or a refractive error. Amblyopia can be treated with glasses, contact lenses, or patching.

  • Conjunctivitis: Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that lines the eyelids and covers the white part of the eye. It is also known as pink eye. Conjunctivitis is usually caused by a virus or bacteria. It is usually mild and goes away on its own within a week or two.

  • Uveitis: Uveitis is an inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye. It can cause pain, redness, and blurred vision. Uveitis can be caused by an infection, an autoimmune disease, or a trauma to the eye. It is usually treated with medication.

  • Glaucoma: Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve. It is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. Glaucoma can be treated with medication or surgery.

  • Eyelid diseases: There are many different types of eyelid diseases, including blepharitis, chalazion, and entropion. These diseases can cause pain, redness, itching, and tearing. They are usually treated with medication or surgery.
